Electric bike maintenance: a practical checklist

Regular inspection improves safety and helps spot developing problems before a long ride or a costly repair.

Before every ride

Battery and charger care

Use the correct charger and inspect its cable and plug. Keep charging equipment dry and ventilated, and follow the manual for storage and charging temperature. Never charge a battery that is swollen, leaking, damaged or unusually hot. Do not open the battery pack or use a charger merely because its plug fits.

Cleaning after wet rides

Use a soft brush or damp cloth rather than high-pressure water. Avoid directing water at the display, battery interface, bearings, motor cable exits and suspension seals. Dry the bike before storage. Clean and lubricate the chain as needed, keeping lubricant away from brake rotors, pads and tyres.

Brakes and drivetrain

Check pad wear, rotor condition, chain wear and shifting. Exact pad shapes, minimum rotor thickness and torque settings depend on the components fitted. If a brake lever becomes soft, a rotor is cracked, a wheel is loose or the drivetrain skips under load, stop riding until the problem is fixed. Do not guess torque values or bypass electrical safety cut-offs.

When to seek professional service

Arrange qualified service for recurring electrical cut-outs, melted connectors, damaged insulation, motor grinding, battery faults, structural cracks, loose steering or any loss of braking. Record the symptom, date, mileage and photos before the repair. Changing several components at once can make diagnosis harder.

Keep a maintenance record

Record tyre pressure checks, brake service, chain replacement, wheel truing, battery concerns and part numbers. This helps you identify wear patterns and makes warranty conversations more efficient. Always follow the specific manufacturer's manual for model-dependent procedures.
